Joe and all, found another publication, TM 9-936, that cites US Army use. Cheers, Bruce.

Norman,

Thank you very much for the above. I was unaware of the animosity between Blacker and Jefferis. It appears MD1 very much let themselves down post war, claiming rewards for their inventions.

Don't think too badly of MD1 personnel or anyone else for that matter. The Royal Commission was set up specifically to allow claims by bona fide inventors who might otherwise have had no recognition at all for their 'war winning' contributions. An interesting aspect of the Commission hearings (run on Court lines) was the great effort made by the Treasury Solicitor side to demean or refute the claims. MD1 personnel, notably Jefferis, Macrae and Clarke, did make claims but Jefferis withdrew his claim allowing Blacker (who was not MD1) a free hand to claim the PIAT. SOE Station XII personnel (such as Langley and Clarke again) also made claims as did people from armament design departments of the Ministry of Supply. The awards are in the public domain but I expect the people who made most out of it were lawyers.
