Sadly have you considered a cut 3pdr, the base markings are of the right nature and the 3pdr has a rim diameter of 63.8mm. Very happy to be proved wrong!

This is a 3-Pdr blank. The give-away is the slots near the mouth, which I think were used to tie the charge into the case.

Roger.

There is 2 slots either side of the neck they look like crimp marks . Someone has told me its a Boer war 6pdr Blank 1899

Any idea of date . and the other headstamp markings . Apprentice the help is 53mm right for a 3 pdr nothing seems to add up with the dimensions
my money is on a 3pr blank mk IV, clue is with the screw in primer.

As previously said, it is a 3pr blank made from a 47mm longer 3pr necked case which has been cut down. The date of the (probably) original length case is 13 3 (18)99, naval marked, and likely nothing to do with the Boer War.

I have a very similar case for sale on QFA at the moment; slightly more meaningful markings on mine! Depotman

the 1909 handbook on ammunition shows this blank and the text refers to slots in the case to tie the charge and shows the screw in primer with the pin sticking out the side to enter the spiral groove in the case. They might be made from standard 3pr cases but would be factory made not just cut down on board due to the primer groove needing special machining.
