Inter-war 18 pdr shrapnel cartridge

You don't see inter-war 18 pdr stuff all that often so here are a few photos of my shrapnel cartridge made up with components from 1927-28.

The shell is a Mk XVII made by PE CO (?) and dated 6/1928. (PE Co, PE CO or PECO inside a bullet/shell shape.)

The fuze is a No. 80 Mk XI made by VSM in 5/26 and filled by RL 1/27.

The case is a Mk III made by EOC in 1927 and fitted with a later 1935-36 MF/ME Australian made primer. Stencilled SHP for shrapnel.

Cheers, Graeme.

PE Co - Projectile and Engineering Co., Ltd. of Battersea, London. The late TonyE grew up near the factory and remembered as a child seeing countless projectiles outside the premises.

Good to see both a fuze and cartridge case put together showing probably the final uses of the Armstrong Whitworth monogram (EOC) and the Vickers Ltd monogram (VSM). As of 1927 the two companies merged to formed Vickers Armstrongs.

That's a very nice example. I have never seen an 18 Pounder case with an inter-war date.

I also have Australian made case from inter war years.
Mk111 from 1927, 1928 and 1929. Mk1V from 1933 and 1939. Not scarce but desirable.

I have Australian made cases Mk III 1927 (maker MC) and Mk IV 1939, 40, 41 & 42 (Maker MF).

I saw this one at a car boot sale over the weekend, which had unfortunately been ruined. Why is it always the good cases?

The first job for the cartridge case factory was refurbishing old 18Pr cases. New MC cases were made in 1927 and 28. The first MF headstamped cases were made in 1929. I have Mk 1 and 11 cases from UK and Canada that are overstamped by MC . Finsbury in SA used the same MC on artillery cases from 1942.
