The 4.7in range of guns have a long history in British and Commonwealth service starting in the Boer War and running through to post WW2. They first appear with the Royal Navy at the end of the 19th century and the Mk8 version armed destroyers in WW2. Despite is naval origins the early guns saw service on land as coastal defence guns and at the start of WW1 as field artillery pieces. Looking at the picture I think you have a fired shrapnel shell of WW1 vintage, these do turn up on the British sectors of the Western Front. I would guess you have a WW1 souvenir. If you google the British 4.7in gun you will find more information than I can possibly write.
