Mystery 30mm HE projectile

Spaceinvader

Well-Known Member
Hello everyone,

I got this projectile from the recent group of items I got. This one specifically came along with the 40mm Bushmaster dummy as they both came from a guy who worked at the factory. He only said that it was an unfinished 30mm projectile.

I noticed once I got it it is extremely similar to an M789 30x113b HEDP projectile except it seems to have a tracer unit on the back instead of the typical semi round bottom. It even goes as far as fitting a M759 fuze and the copper cone.

I dont know of any US M230 ammunition in use with a tracer unit, and I was unable to find any export rounds with one either.

Anyone got any ideas?

Rhys

The LW30 family does include the XM977 TP-T, so maybe your example shows an experimental HEDP-T variation (unless someone assembled it from bits of different rounds).

Ahh I did not know a TP-T existed! Ill have a look around for that then and see how it compares to my projectile. The US does not use it however, is that correct?

To be clear the fuze did not come with the projectile and was one I already had. I ONLY got the unfinished projectile body.
The tracer is part of the rest of the body, and is one solid piece.

The XM designation indicates that it is experimental, and not adopted for service. I know nothing more than that it existed, according to Jane's Ammunition Handbook.

Oh duh, I completely ignored the XM, my apologies.

Well that doesnt look any better for getting an ID then. The hunt continues but not holding out great hope for getting a solid ID.

Bringing this thread back up but I accidentally found what I believe is the ID for this round. It appears to be an ATK made 30x113mm HEI-T projectile. Makes sense as it did come from a guy who worked at ATK. Photos were found from an ATK slideshow found online.
