stating the obvious (forgive me) from the label it held a MK XIV pistol to set off the depth charge at a pre set, in action depth, by hydrostatic pressure. WWII dated. as to which Mk depth charge and how they were tested you would need to ask someone else. Might find a picture etc of one if you are lucky on the net.

Thank you 2pounder, It's not what i collect so don't know much about them, and thank you for pointing that out i will do some more research.

An aircraft dropped depth charge!! from a long range aircraft probably with radar to attack submarines that have been detected travelling on the surface. the spotting of the aircraft by the sub would make them dive and the aircraft would get a straight un interrupted bombing run to get the sub as it was diving. It was only later that the subs realised that if they stayed surfaced and fired at the aircraft they had a better chance of survival.

I've got an identical box. Will post photos when I get back from holiday.

At last. Back from holiday and with a working camera again.

Here's some photos of my box. Found it is dated 3/44.

Based upon Andy's photos does this box hold a single pistol? If so a big beast.
