Hey guys,

This has probably been asked before, but i couldn't find anything so here i go: can someone explain to me the difference between a German AZ 23 and an AZ 23/28 fuze?
Where both the types used on the 88 mm and 105 mm shells?

regards, gerbenvh

Hello,

These fuzes are not common Az23-Az23/28 but "Preßstoff" model.

Herewith diagrams :

AZ23 was used for multiple artillery shells of 75mm on up. The AZ23/28 is for higher velocity weapons such as the Flak 18, KwK 36 and KwK 43 88mm guns.

The AZ 23/28 or AZ 23/28 Pr, as far as I know / could find in documents, was used in these projectiles:
8,8cm Sprgr. L/4,5 (Kz)
8,8cm Sprgr. L/4,5 Stg
8,8cm Sprgr. L/4,5 (Pr Zugz)
8,8cm Sprgr. L/4,5 (Üb.R.)
8,8cm Sprgr. L/4,5 (Üb.W.)
8,8cm Sprgr. Flak 41
8,8cm Sprgr. 43
10cm Gr. 19
10cm Gr. 19 (Üb.B.)
10,5cm Sprgr. L/4,4
10,5cm Sprgr. L/4,4 Stg
10,5cm Sprgr. L/4,4 (Pr Zugz)
10,5cm Sprgr. L/4,4 (ÜbW)
10,5cm Sprgr. L/4,4 (ÜbR)
12,8cm Sprgr. L/4,5
12,8cm Sprgr. L/4,5 (ÜbW)
12,8cm Sprgr. 5151 L/5,0

When regular AZ 23v was used in the 8,8 cm and 10,5 cm AA guns premature explosions occured just before or inside the barrel. So the spring between the needle and primer carriers was strengthened and the fuze was designated AZ 23/28.

Note: There was also kl AZ 23/28 used for the 8,35 cm AA gun of Czech origin.

I also found Az23/28Pr on 15.8cm HE.

alright thanks for all the information guys! really interesting to finaly read about the differences. i learned something today!

That makes sense.
The manual HDv 119/548 for 15,2 cm Sprgr I have is from 1943.
Lists AZ1 and Dopp.Z S/60 in text plus AZ23v in the drawing annex.
Same in D 435/2.
There must have been more of such substitutes.
Thank You, Bob
