I'm surprised we were still using wooden boxes in 1979, I thought they were all steel by then.

I have a sneaky feeling there is a story behind these boxes. The shell seems to be American (M1) with an L85A1 fuze? But the box, at least, passed through Kineton in 1990. Was something being repaired. Also, the box isnt painted service brown.

The current 105mm box is the P85 which is steel as Falcon mentions.

Dont know much about boxes for artillery rounds but the word "caisse" and the markings "LUL" are French if I'm not mistaken ? Tony.

The Italian OTO Melara Mod 56 or in British service L5 Pack Howitzer. Used American M1 ammunition. The dates on the box also match this weapon.

First pic from myself, interesting story. The RHA used this actual gun in support of the Paras in Aden/Radfan was later sold to the Argies who used it in 1982 AGAINST the Paras in the Falkland Islands. edit: see pics by rnixartillery below for details. :)
