I'm completely out of my collecting area here but just had to have this one.

Its an XM 227 (PGU1) for the Gau 6/A.

Any further information would be of interest.

All inert and the projectile appears to be bronze (no AP core).

Dave.

I have one of those also - there was a whole series made with minor differences. I have no data on bullet weight or muzzle velocity, but it must have hit at least 4,000 fps.

The GAU-6 is described and illustrated in Chinn. It was a six-barrel rotary, like a small M61 Vulcan. It was only ever made experimentally in .50 BMG calibre, since the problems with getting the 10mm ammo to work properly were not resolved before the gun was cancelled. Bizarrely, the GAU-6 was intended for the F-15 fighter, which was a deeply silly notion by a school of thought in the USAF which held muzzle velocity to be more important than anything else.

Thanks, I saw that odd necked-down .50 case being discussed on the IAA forum.

There are some very tasty items shown in that thread!

Links.

Just a few photos of the link to go with this round.

Dave.
