18 pdr Projectile with Steel Fuse

Picked this up, few markings, steel fuse bit unusual? iam a complete novice, i guess its been some kind of display hence the extra band added, plan on removing that and putting it with a case. Cant comment on the fuse, only seen brass ones before so any help most appreciated! What kind of value would it have, paid 30 for it again seemed ok but that was a complete guess on my part

Thanks for looking
Mike

Hi Mike,
I think you did rather well there, a nice piece of first world war memorabilia, if it were mine I think I would leave it as such as 18pr projectiles are fairly common if you wanted to make up a complete round for display, as for the steel looking fuze I would say from the pictures that it looks like the shell body and brass fuze have been chrome plated at some point.
Best regards Weasel.

Mike,

Looks like a standard HE shell to me and quite nice at that. Price was very good for an HE complete with fuze.

I agree with Weasel that it appears to be the correct brass 101 fuze that has been nickel plated and has just dulled over time. (Chromium plating wasn't adopted until the very late 1920s, so more likely to be nickel.)

It is a very nice piece of WW1 memorabilia or trench art as it is, but as HE shells are much rarer than shrapnel it would also look good as a complete HE round, particularly if you painted it in the correct colours.

Cheers,

Graeme

What a great piece of history Mike, thanks for showing it.

Dave.

Beauty. That's perfect the way it is. Sits nice on a desk or shelf. Put that in a case and unless you bolt it down it is just waiting to get knocked over. The steel HE fuzes are real tough to find. They sure dont survive being buried the way the brass ones do. That whole ensemble is a great find.
