1913 Bayonet - Advice required

I have in my collection a 1913 bayonet. It's got its leather scabbard still, but both were aged and damaged.

As you can see its grips have been replaced at some point in the past to be fitted with home made ones. I've brought a spare set of 1913 grips and screws to fit onto it. The old grips have been removed, and were actually extremely nice wood work done with some skill.

I've given it a clean with some Dettol and a nail brush and sponge to get the worst of the grease and grime off.

But it still has a layer of rust. I don't want to go at it, strip off the rust, and end up with a shiny hilt and a dull aged blade. Nor do I want to polish the entire thing up. I'd ideally like to get it back to that old dull steel look they should have. Does any one have any ideas?

Scrub the metalwork with fine wire wool lubricated with gun oil. This will take off the surface crud / corrosion, but leave the metal with some patina.
