1916 Verdun offensive artisnal grenades

At the beginning of 1916, small crafts shops made their contributions under the great demand for munitions posed by Von Falkenhayn's Verdun offensive. The usual grenade manufacturers, producing about 6 million units per month, were unable to keep up with the demand, and practically homemade grenades reappeared, just as at the start of 1915. These models found only around Verdun were made of tubing and other materials used for central heating, such as threaded caps and joints. The explosive used was the same as for the "Kugelhandgranates", which did not require a detonator. The handle for the stick grenade was made of very strong wood, threaded into the explosive head. The other model was lit by a simple match. A loop in the base (non stick model) allowed it to be hooked to a lanyard and thrown like a slingshot. One of the stick type variants is shown in thumbnail..Dano
