Hello, I have a German 150mm projectile dated 1936 that was sold to me as a Type 38 smoke round and I am hoping to find out if this is what it really is. It has no fuze.
It is 58.5cm long, and is marked as follows:
The top of the round is stamped with: 396 and then below it another 396. Slightly lower is: GbG/B36/38 and below that is: Mr.2.39
Halfway down it is marked: 80 DL45 1936. Below that is KPS.
(The DL is stamped above the 45 with a horizontal line between.)
Does anyone know which fuze is correct for this round and where I might find one? THANKS IN ADVANCE! Pat

15 cm Nb

Hello,
first question, if it is really a Model 36, it must have a filling hole in the middel of the shell because the Nebel filling was liquid. See first pic. Little problem, the model 36 is +/- 62 cm long.

When I take your dimension of 58,5 cm, I found the 15 cm Modell 19 (length 58,6 cm). But other problem, didn't exist as smoke shell, but well as Gas shell. See second and third pic.

I found an other model 38, for infantry gun JG 33, but the nebel version is 56,5 cm long. See pic 4.

The possible fuzes are the series AZ23 or AZ1.

Make your choice and good luck for Id.
Sorry for the bad quality of my pics

Does it have a filling plug in middle of the side? 1 or 2 driving bands?

15 cm Gr. 19 Kh. ( smoke ) is 586mm long . 15 cm Gr. 36 ( HE ) is also 586mm long.
Further there are other different length 15 cm smoke and He shells.

For smoke shell you need AZ 23 Nb fuze and for HE-shell any other version of AZ 23

Yodamaster was faster ;-)

15cm shell

Hello and thank you for the information. My projectile looks JUST like picture #1 but it has 2 rotating bands as seen in picture #2.
It does not have a removable ogive and it does not have a removable base plug. It does have the filling hole in the side. I will try to post some pictures soon (once I figure out how). THANKS AGAIN! Pat

Pat, did you get a copy of the Handbook the last time you were at the house?

15 cm Granate 38 Nb

Oooookayy,
then I think you have this model, 15 cm Granate 38 Nb
Look on the pic, it have two rotating bands.
The two versions are possible, with one FES (light steel) band or two KPS (copper plated on steel) bands.

15 cm Granate 38 nb

That looks just like my projectile. What compound would it be filled with and are the AZ23 and AZ1 both correct fuze possibilities?
Thanks for all of the help!!! Pat

The filling of the Nebel shell was "trioxyde de soufre" (in french). I found a translation on the web but I am not sure of it "sulfur trioxide".

The fuzes that you can possibly find on this shell are AZ23 Nb, AZ 40 Nb and, but that I'm not sure, AZ1.

Fuzes

Here you shall find the different fuzes possible :
AZ 23 Nb
AZ 23 Nb (Pr) Preisstof
Kl AZ 40 Nb
Kl AZ 40 Nb (Pr) Preisstof
