A garage sale pickup, the owner was told it was a food storage container. She did not know anything. Any other info?

I ate many a meal served from such containers while in the US Army on maneuvers in Germany in the 1980's. We called them Mermite cans. That was how we got our hot meals in the field - not always hot by the time of delivery. The company First Sargeant would bring those out to the platoons in a jeep (M151) once a day when delivering food, fuel and ammo. He escorted the fuel and supply trucks. This was for an M1 tank company with three platoons and 14 tanks.
