As smle2009 states they are Hispano with the right hand one being the older style projectile and the left hand one being the "new" style Hispano projectile.
It looks like the modern one may be missing its Tracer insert ?

Hi Chris,
do you know when(ish) the "new" type started to be used, any of the "old" type I have come across have been WW2 dated,I do know that the 'pointy' A/P version, same as WW2 type, was still being used in the 80's.
I think you are correct about the tracer insert missing/removed as the HE-T photo'd above has also had it removed(probably to inert it)

Cheers

View attachment 50663View attachment 50662View attachment 50661View attachment 50660side by side old and new, 2nd pic base of projectile , head stamps LOT1 20MM 73, RG 1942 20MM OILED UNFIRED PRIMER, last one is top of projectile, when both are seated in the neck of shell casing they are the same size ,its when you stand the projectiles together you see differences in height the new one has more of a boat tail rear and is taller.

thanks for the feed back it really helps

The shells belong to the 20x110 Hispano, are the 20x128 Oerlikon

Hi Tony and in answer to your question I can only offer a very approximate date of 1964 for a changeover-I may be well wide of the mark however !
There were stocks of wartime issued Ball and a small amount of AP (Mark 3 or 4-unsure which) still available in 1975 but all HE/HEI had to sourced from other countries such as Italy (BPD in particular) although home grown stocks of SAP/I were seemingly plentiful for some time after 75.
I hope that helps you determine an approximate date for the changeover,
Best regards
Chris

Here you have the difference
smle2009 the yellow tip is a 20x102 vulcan, it is Oerlikon

Hi Hasag,
don't know how I missed this part of the post, but no, it is a projectile for the 20x128mm Oerlikon,it is from the test range at Fallingworth from the tests to develop a 'universal' projectile, the one in my photograph was made by BMARCO and has a sintered iron drive band, the Vulcan version of this projectile has a copper drive band.
The 'universal' projectile is longer than and has a different profile to the 'normal' Vulcan projectile and shorter than the 'normal' KAA projectile
