2cm PzGr.40???

Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me what I have here? I thought this would be a round perhaps used in the Panzer II, but I'm not sure now.... It doesn't have the long solothurn round I keep seeing. So, now I'm not certain what it is. I had my hopes up that I'd found a tank round used in the KwK 30 & 38's. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: This one is not the one I will receive, that one is pictured below. Thought I'd leave these photos too though, for forum reference.

Hello Avenger,

The projectile is called 2cm Pzgr.40 and the case you have is correct (and original) 20x138.
There is a long thread here --> http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/93308-20mm-(2cm)-Pzgr-40-Projectiles?highlight=pzgr40
Given the rarity of these and the coloration being identical to those on the thread, your round is definitely one of the ten. (Unless of course two mags of 10 were found in the water)

There was a discussion about usage of them, and yes, you may have found a tank round (Panzer II), or an armored car round (eg SdKfz222), or any other FlaK30/38 used in an Anti-armour role. The only way you'd know for sure is if they were found inside a vehicle.

Well done,
Rich

Thanks Rich! In all honesty, it's fairly immaterial to me if it were literally in a tank, but I was just hoping I had bought the correct type of ammo that could have been found in and used by one of the period. I guess I got lucky on this one! :)

It sounds like these aren't easy to find, which I clearly had not done enough due diligence before buying it. I would not have imagined these would be faked. But then until just now, I expected they were pretty common too. I should have known better since although I'm new to ordinance, I have been collecting militaria for a while now. I'll have to be more careful going forward.

Thanks again sir for the feedback.

I took the images I posted above from the sellers facebook page (he posts his finds there), but it looks like there was a second one which I will be getting. I thought they were the same one, but they're different. The one I bought doesn't say 5b41 on the tip, it says 2c41. Is this a batch number and date perhaps? It's not in quite as good of condition as the one I posted earlier unfortunately, missing the tracer plug material, but it looks original if the earlier one I posted is. Here are the photos of the one I bought:

My seller tells me he has a few more of these. He's going to send me photos of the remainders, not sure how many there are. I would assume they'll be somewhere around $200 each. He's in Russia. If anyone is interested in one, send me a PM and once I learn more I'll get some contact info for him to you.

Thanks Rich! Yeah, I enjoy taking photos. We have an excellent point and shoot Canon S95, IMO one of the better recent model point and shoots this side of a DSLR. I built an LED lightbox for taking photos of my WW2 collection in also, which helps a lot with making sure the lighting is good enough for clear shots. Both were used on these photos.
