21cm German HE....

Morning all,
Finally managed to buy a nice 21cm German HE to fill a hole in the collection, and have found a couple of numbers & letters stamped into the driving band. Its now put the doubt into my mind as to whether this shell has been rebanded as the numerals look to be quite modern although the letters DF are 'ornate'. The numbers/letters are DF 04 93

I could be totally wrong and be fussing for nothing, but was it common to mark driving bands?

Also, anyone here know what the markings 'DFG 89' mean. They are stamped into the ogive about 2" from the top of the shell.
Lastly, would anyone have any close ups of driving bands on this type of shell?

Will post some pics when the missus returns the camera....
Many thanks and grateful for any info!
Regards,

Hi Andy,

Yeah, me too. Do love the heavies. this lump measures a squat 500mm from base to top of shell (minus fuse), 207mm base diametre (pitted base so may have lost original dimension), 25mm driving band. And the weight of a bag of anvils......
Still, it's a dwarf compared to the 28cm French Mortier shell that sits in the corner. At 205kg, only people who can fly are allowed to touch it, for fear of the combined weight making it falling through the floor..
As for the 21cm, it has a superb Gr.Z.04 fuse fitted, one which I have been saving for years in the hope it'll find a 21cm to nestle into. Success at last. Other pieces include 3 x 8", a 9.2", few 15cm, 6"HE, French 155mm's, 4.5"s, then small stuff.
I take it you are a fellow biggie collector! :tinysmile_fatgrin_t

HI Dylan
Hope you get an answer about the drive band markings. I would very much like to know myself. Perhaps they were museum collection markings?? I brought that shell from a guy who had bought it from my belgian supplier. I asked him and he said he could not remember the shell. If it turns out to be bad i really don't mind having it back if it becomes a problem.
I agree with Andysarmoury, It would be good to see some more of your collection!!

As for the 6", very nice piece.
