Hi Andy, Official colour scheme for a WW2 Illum bomb is black with white markings, I have one in my collection. Sometimes they are unpainted with black markings as in D. gordons pic. I noticed recently on a post here that the canadian colour was dark green with black markings. One side of one tail fin was painted red to denote a live propelling cartridge. Tony.

Thanks tony have you got a pic as i would like to re letter mine.
Cheers
Andy

I will take a pic for you asap, but I don't have it handy tonight. You might find it hard to get a tin cap for it in good condition, a later one would be ok though. Here is a scan of 2" signal, star and illum bombs from 1949. Tony.

Hi Andy, Here are a couple of pics of my WW2 dated 2" illum bomb. Mine has the steel tail which is varnished. The diecast parts are un-painted. The body is black and the main markings look as though they were pale yellow once upon a time, they read : ILLG. WITH PARACHUTE (all contained in a rectangle) also 1/45 T (in a circle) lot 22. Also marked MOD 2/44. The cap is not painted, only tinned and has darkened with age. There is a large raised "P" on it and also a smaller embossed "L" . hope this is of some use, Tony.

Not really sure when the steel fins first came along, mortars are not my specialist subject but one of our other members will surely know. Tony.

red paint

Red paint was also applied on one fin to denote a Mazak tail fin. Only one side of the fin was painted the unpainted side was a stamp.
I quote

'No.2 o Z is stamped on one vane the reverse of which is painted red'

Thanks for that mine has 2 o Z stamped on one vane and the reverse of which is painted red.
Thanks
Andy
