A good reason not to ever piss off a skymarshall.

Cutaway model of a .38 Special (SPL) beanbag cartridge. The cartridge is to be categorized in the “less lethal ammo” range. It is known under the brand names “Bean bag”, “short stop”, “pancake ammunition”, “high safety ammunition”.

The bean bag is intended to be used in aircraft, where one cannot take the risk of puncturing the wall of the airplane, either cutting cables or hydraulic lines.
Upon firing the pusher cap pushes the assembly out of the barrel, allowing the beanbag to unfold and hit the intended target. At very close range it seems to be sufficient to knock a person over, at some longer distance (cannot be really far in an average plane) it still seems to feel like a hard blow with a fist.

The cartridge is build-up of a chrome plated brass shellcase, in which a small powdercharge is placed in the base. The powdercharge is locked up by a soft transparent plastic pusher cap. Above the pusher plate , the bean bag is placed in a rolled up position. The bean bag is build up of two Kevlar fabric rounds with a 25mm diameter, glued together at the circumference. It is filled with half a teaspoon lead grain. A red round hollow nose cap is placed over the beanbag and in the shellcase.

Regards, DJH
