7.62x51mm NATO Ammunition RG Headstamps

Hi TonyE,
I think we should hold the bus on this one,it arrived yesterday and is NOT a blank as you can see from the photo,I suspect this "round" originated from World Wide Arms from their "sky marshall" 9mm rounds and have heard that these projectiles are put into any fired 9mm case that they have to hand!
Sorry about this mistake:tinysmile_cry_t4:
All the best
Tony

A couple of questions re: your post.

Do you know what "9mm Ball R98" is? Any description?
Do you know who makes the Frangible Ball L27A1 or the Sub-sonic ball L26A1?
Any description/manufacturer for Ball L28A1?
Presumably Ball 9mm Short L29A1 is 9mm Kurz (9 x 17mm or .380 ACP) for the Walther or Sig pistols?

Any details appreciated.

Regards
TonyE

TonyE - sorry not too much further info at this time -

If you can interpret Nato stock numbers (NSN) then the following may be of use -

L28a1 has NSN - 1305-50-000-0290

L29a1 has NSN -
1305-99-3371084
L27a1 has NSN -
1305-20-004-6874
L26a1 has NSN -
1305-99-216-9587
In a NSN the second set of digits represents the country of origin - 99 = UK

Will come back with more info if possible.

A couple of questions re: your post.

Do you know what "9mm Ball R98" is? Any description?

The R98 is listed as a Royal Ordnance Radway Green item - it may be a trials/demo variant. I cant find any reference to it being assigned an "E" designation for experimental. There are references to packaging types - M2A1 or H83

5.56 Rounds

Thanks for this list exat808; can you tell me what "RRLP" stands for, please? And is "CQT" "Close Quarter Training"?
I see there is a "Blank L1A1" but also "Cartridge Ballistite L1A1". Is this a grenade blank? Didn't know we had an AP round in this calibre; is it British made, or imported? And if so, who is it made by, please?
If anyone has spares of these, and also the Marker rounds and Tracers, I can give them a good home!
Roger.

Hi,
The RRLP is Reduced Range Limited Penetration - it is listed apparently with the standard 62gr bullet
The CQT is Close Quarter Training.
Strange to see 2 listings for L1A1 blank - but you are right the ballistite version is for rifle grenade dischargers.
The AP round - cant shed much more light on this - maybe a buy in of US M995 AP rounds - NSN is 1305 01 393 7050 perhaps LcplCombat can unravel the NSN - is 01 USA?

RG Blank

I have seen these blanks but do not have one. I believe they were a contract specifically for Australia.

I will take the very useful information on the new L numbers for 7.62mm and 5.56mm posted by exat808 and update my list and re-post it.

Regards
TonyE

"L" Numbers

Thanks for your reply exat808, but now some more questions, this time about your 7.62mm list!
1. What is Ball AP Sniper 9 ?
2. You have Ball L42A1, and Sniper L42A1. Surely these are both the same round with the 155 grains bullet?
3. You have Ball L40A1, and Ball High Performance L40A1. Both the same ??
4. Can you tell us anything more about Ball L2A5, please?
5. Ditto AP L50A1, Super Sub-sonic L51A1, and Sniper L52A1.
6. Do all these "L" numbers appear in the headstamps? (This question also applies to the 9mm & 5.56mm rounds)
Some really interesting sounding rounds, which I shall have to keep my eyes open for!
Roger.

The list in my post is extracted from a current ( unclassified) database from the MOD's classification authority. Some but not all entries have Nato Stock Numbers that may assist in ID. It may be assumed that if there is an entry on the database then the listed item has been in MOD possession at some time.
I will do some more digging for you and respond asap.

7.62x51mm TRACER: RG 08 (+) L45A1

Recent additions to the list are:
Ball
L44A1 RG
L45A1 RG
Hi TonyE,

I just acquired a number of belted GPMG 1:1 BALL TRACER rounds with H/S BALL: RG 08 (+) L44A1
TRACER: RG 08 (+) L45A1

I think this shows RG L45A1 to be TRACER and NOT BALL as previously suggested.

Cheers
Andy

MOD still list a 1B/1T linked belt as L44A1(Ball) with L45A1(Tracer). It also appears in the 4B/1T combination.

I have a 7.62x51 RG 84 FMJ

Im currently looking for RG rounds from years 70, 72, 73, 81, 83, 84, 86 - 89, 96, 97, 00 - 02 & 09.

I have a 7.62x51 RG 84 FMJ, looks like a live round, maybe a dud. The primer looks to have a very light hit.
