The difference between 8.8 pzgr 39 and the 8.8 pzgr 39/43 is the width of the drivingbands. The 8,8cm PzGr39 and the 8,8cm Pzgr39/1 (narrow drivingbands) were used in the Flak 18/36 , 37, and the 39/43 (wide drivingbands) was used for the KWk43 gun
The main difference between the Pzgr39 and the 39-1 is the improved steel quality for the Pzgr39-1 . It is marked with a white ink 1 on the ballistic cap. for he rest there are no visable differences.
It must be noted that the PzGr39 and PzgGr39-1 (narrow drivingbands) could be used on the KwK 43 shellcase. The wide bdrivingbands (KwK39/43 wa used when the barrel was worn. However, offer a collector a Kwk 43 shellcase with a narrow drivingbands projectile ... and he does not want it as he thinks the combination is incorrect, although it is correct.
Hi Minenaz, I think you've already highlighted the only visible difference.
8,8cm PzGr - Has a larger internal cavity for charge (this wasnt in your list but is externally different to the other 3 you listed)
8,8cm PzGr39 and Pzgr39-1 I believe have no visible external difference. The different was the hardness of the steel used or I guess treatment of the steel in manufacture
8,8cm PzGr39/43 has ~17.8mm driving ban (obturating ring) versus 12,3mm on PzGr, PzGr39 and PzGr39-1 -- ie 50% wider
If you download the following PDF, it'll show you all the details you need.
Here you are, I have 25 different types of 88mm shells, but I am still trying to get this one, by now I'd be willing to pay a small fortune for the right one on the picture.
Thank you so much DJ,
That is the first time I have ever seen a photo of that projectile, and like you, it is a holy grail of mine, even in that condition.
My understanding is that none made it to combat as the tungsten was redirected to manufacturing, although I've never seen this documented.
Thanks Rich
The difference in internal cavity size can be easily seen by the larger fuse used in the 8,8 PzGr. The BdZ für 8,8 cm PzGr is considerably larger than the BdZ 5127 used in the 8,8 PzGr39 series. Latter is approx. twice as narrow
The 8,8 cm Pzgr can be found with either KPS of FES driving bands. The ballistic cap (windshield) of the 8,8 cm AP shells were attached to the nose cap by crimping, welding or spot welding.

thanks for your answer pzgr40/42, I know the difference of cavity and fuze and my first question (now ok) was about external differences between 8.8 pzgr 39, 8.8 pzgr 39-1 and 8.8 pzgr 39/43.
I am also very interested in these 88mm rounds and it looks as though the chart that you posted is very informative. My own interest lies in getting accurate measurements and line drawing profiles of these rounds as I am trying to create scale miniatures of them. The chart's length measurements, however, are not really legible even when enlarged. Could I have those measurements or perhaps some link to this information and/or some profile drawings that better show the rings on these rounds? Any help in this regard would be very, very appreciated as I am trying to be as accurate as possible.
Hi James, one of the best drawings available are posted in the first post of this thread.
For general information on 88mm ammunition get the Waffenrevue No 13.
Here are the overall length from Waffenrevue:
Sprgr -1167,4mm
Pzgr 39-1 - 1125,4mm
Pzgr 40 1119,2mm
Hl - 1174mm
Attached are some better (I hope) pictures from the manual.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information with me and for posting the better detailed drawings. It is a tremendous help to me and is exactly what I needed (and could never find anywhere but here!). This is exactly what I needed.
