1 - There’s potentially two explanations – 1, the projectile is not fitted with a smoke box. 2, it is Explodered for use with an igniferous fuze. However, as it is fitted with what appears to be a No. 106 fuze, which is not an igniferous fuze, it must be the 1st option. (Additionally, in the first instance it is described as a black tip, whereas the second is described as a black ring.)
2 – Filled T.N.T.
3 – H.E. Drill and it appears that there is a vertical black stripe indicating that the projectile is fitted with an economy driving band.
4 – CORRECTION - On a gun projectile - a gun and howitzer of the same calibre exist. The shell is suitable for the gun.
Sorry to interrupt on this thread but i have a black band around the No20 Mk1 grenade i have, would this mean TNT normally filled with amatol or ammonal.
