Body armour

During the troubles in Northern Ireland, a lot of time, money and research went into developing body armour.
One of the threats was that from the .50cal rifle.

Below are some images of body armour plates that have been tested against .50 cal and also 7.62mm.

The plates were fired at from 10m using .50 AP incendary and 7.62mm AP rounds.

As you can see the armour stopped the rounds but the kinetic energy transfer was still huge!

peteblight,

The kinetic energy from the shot will kill you fast enough. We call this "Blunt Trauma"

Mitigating blunt trauma

Regarding the effect of blunt trauma, this has been proven to be effectively reduced by the the addition of an attenuating foam pad between the Boron Carbide plate and the wearer.

Without the foam, the blunt trauma will as you say, more than likely kill the wearer. But by adding this extra layer you'll end up on the floor but walk away.

I've seen the effects of this first hand during trials and testing of body armour and EOD suits and was amazed at the difference a foam pad can make.
