Hi ive just bought a German Stock mine 43 with a brass zz42 ignitor , now i have plenty of bakelite ? zz42 and have heard of brass ,and alloy versions but why did the Germans bother with the metal versions ,that could be easily detected ?Any info please Dave

What i know about it is that the steel version is used in the Riegelmine because the bakelite version brakes to fast.

good morning, big Dave,

are you sure it's brass ?
that would be a sensational found, I've never heard something about such a ZZ42. what about the length of the firing pin?
think a fine picture would help!

German Mines And Traps (War Office 1943) states, and I quote:

5. Modifications

ZZ.42 igniters have now been encountered made entirely of metal instead of having a plastic housing. Use of ZZ.42 igniters of this type in Schu-Mines 42 and Wooden Box Mines would facilitate detection.

It's a reprint of original WW2 material, so I'm taking it as pretty good info!
