Dave you are correct , Bickford fuse is used. These ignitors were used in early WW1 grenades ,[number 15 etc] the top lead cap and tear off tape when pulled off expose a friction match composition. The copper wires were to be used to hold the detonator assembly onto /into the grenade itself.The Number 15 Ball grenade had a round headed screw set in place to enable the copper wires to be twisted around it.
