Colour Matching

One query that crops up on a regular basis is that of colour matching. Obtaining the right paint in the country of origin is not normally a problem, obtaining it on the other side of the Atlantic might be.

Whilst searching for some paint to restore some machinery I chanced upon this website - https://hextoral.com/ which would appear to be an answer to such problems.

If, for example, we take Federal Std 595C 33538 (International Yellow) which MIL-STD-709D http://everyspec.com/MIL-STD/MIL-STD-0700-0799/download.php?spec=MIL-STD-709D_CHG-1.033308.pdf states as the colour to denote the presence of an HE filling on US ordnance.

What is needed is the 'HEX' code for the colour, at the moment there doesn't appear to be a direct way of obtaining this.

However, if one selects 'side by side' on the home page it will take you here - https://hextoral.com/side-by-side/

All that you need to enter in the 'Left side colour' is '33538' which will bring up the full title. You are required to enter a colour for 'Right side colour' I use 'RAL 1000' Then click on 'Show Colours'

This brings you to https://hextoral.com/side-by-side/i...yellow-ana-614-33538-vs-green-beige-ral-1000/ You'll see now there is a 'HEX' code given for '33538' namely '#EFA01B'

Click on the 'HEX code' and it will take you here - https://hextoral.com/hex-color/EFA01B/federal-std-595c/ you'll notice on the right side of the screen there is 'Compare with best matching colour from' From the drop down box you'll there is a host of ranges to choose from.

If you select 'RAL Classic' and click 'show comparison' it takes you here - https://hextoral.com/side-by-side/i...llow-ana-614-33538-vs-signal-yellow-ral-1003/ In this instance it's close but maybe not as close as one would like.

Another option is 'Manual Matching' I recommend reading their text as it explains why you might not get a good match from the previous method and other shortcomings. Firstly 'copy' the 'HEX code' and click on 'Manual Matching.' This will take you to this page - read it, then scroll down and select 'HEX to RAL Classic.' That will take you here https://hextoral.com/hex-to-ral-classic/ then paste the 'HEX code' into the relevant dialog box and click 'OK.' This will take you here - https://hextoral.com/hex-to-ral-classic/EFA01B/ you can then scroll down through the various RAL colours. On my monitor at least, RAL 1004 is a very close match.

There is a facility to identify RAL colours from an image. It would appear they are constantly updating the site with new tools all the time.
