Container but for what ?

This cames from an old Farm House.
Together with the nice 3inch Ammo Box.

But what was in the small container ???

Guessing it was for MkII 3" phosphorus mortar bombs.....as that's what it says on the side of the tin :neutral: as for the small container,lighter fuel? :wink:

As LCPLCOMBAT says, it doesn't look British, I don't think its ammunition related, more likely a flour container from a mobile kitchen. The 3"Mortar box is nice though....

It's a D68375 50 round .50 cal box for use on the early pintle mounts for tanks.

Indeed! US made but used by many. I suspect they are fairly unusual now as they have no real other use unlike the later 100 rd boxes.

Is it an acctual ammuntion box or is it fitted to the weapon and filled from an ammuniton box?

It's a little of both. The box mounts on the pintle mount and came filled. Tanks also had stowage for the M17 100rd boxes which were used to refill the mounted box. Both were replaced by the later box that is considered the standard 50 cal box. That fits in a box holder tray on the later pintle mounts.
