Picked this up, base fuzed for practice. White band only, P marked fuze body.
Not the practice projectile but the explosive penetrating type as used for practice.
1897 case, not sure of the projectile date, it could be on the base but not
visible yet. The case top is slightly expanded so I need to get a bigger brass
bell to resize it. It wasn't a steal, but is complete and decent and original so was okay.

A nice round Gordon, an nice to find with the P marked base fuze,
Best regards Weasel.

I was asking about the length because I have a couple of these older 6Pr projectiles and would like to know more about them.

8 1/2 inches, the separate base protrudes about 1/16" more. These will be pretty
much standard no matter which country. The solid British practice version is shorter.
I would expect the French Mle 1888 to be the same also. These are all based on
the Hotchkiss 6pr though finding one of those with the rounded three ribbed band
would be something.

Thank you for the information. Much appreciated......I'll dig mine out and see how they compare. Yes, it would be especially good to find one of the French ones.

You will be lucky to find a date on the projectile, but a Mk no to the side sometimes (prob MKII) but its fine for the case. the fuze should be dated on the flat. Tig

A bigger brass bell

A Larger Cow Bell Does it ~
The fuze markings were ground off then the P mark was added, Mklll projectile.
As so often happens the projectile had been pushed a bit too far into the case
and the fit was a bit sloppy. So a Bigger brass bell was invested in - this one good for 57mm - 75mm+
and problem solved. My sloppy fit image was so sloppy I couldn't use it ~
