Firepower Museum To Leave Woolwich

That is a shame - I'm off to visit there in September. I wonder where the collection will end up being displayed?

Hopefully not beside the Aberdeen/Picatinny collections.

I went to the Rotunda years ago and was amazed at the incredible range of munitions on display. A wonderful building crammed full of all the good stuff we all like.
It moved to Woolwich and I visited Firepower in the first month of it opening..................and could hardly find any munitions at all, they all seemed to have vanished apart from the odd round here and there.
Lets hope wherever it moves to doesn't do away with the munitions altogether.
Dave.

It is such a shame that the powers that be get anal about all things connected with munitions,it is as a result of of the design/invention and use of such munitions/weapons and the sacrifices made by the people that used them that we are able to live and enjoy freedom in any way we wish,oh yes, ditto the second line of Spotters post,
Don,

If you do visit, make sure you get into the second building - I was there recently and had to get a chap to get the keys and open it up. Its where the ammunition is stored - you can't really call it displayed, on racks behind chicken wire! Hopefully it will go somewhere meaningful like Fort Nelson or Larkhill. See attached

I was in London yesterday and had a couple of hours spare so headed down to the firepower museum. As Spotter said originally, the museum is closing and the buildings are being redeveloped in to a theatre and dance studios. The collection will be split up and moved to various other museums, although it is unclear at the moment which ones. If you plan on going, get there sooner rather than later as it will close in June 2016, but the collection will start to be removed much sooner than that.
As Dave suggested, I managed to get them to open the building where the ord is stored and went one further and got them to open the enclosures. Unfortunately I didn't have a decent camera, only my iphone, but got some reasonable pictures all the same.
For me the most interesting ord on display was the really old stuff which shows the development of artillery projectiles.

Cheers

Pete

My understanding is that the desire is to move the Museum to a location near Larkhill. A smaller temporary display will continue to be at Woolwich after the Firepower Museum closes, but under the banner of Greenwich museums. Regarding the site of the new location however, I understand the move is proving difficult due to problems funding and obtaining the desired location.
