Hello,

Does someone could point me in the right direction for docs about this french studded shell model 1858 (Obus à tenons de 16 Mle 1858). I only only have a poor quality picture :

Thanks and regards,

Brian,

Thanks for these links but unfortunately, there is nothing about the shell I mentioned.
I did a search on BOCN and WK2AMMO, prior to create this thread.
The Museum für historische Wehrtechnik is very interesting, but has only two mentions : "Canon de 16c Modèle 1820-1840 transformé" & "Canon de 16c Modèle 1858 transformé" but nothing about their projectiles
I will keep searching, but I still need help.

Regards,

S.

This is all that I can find.
The first rifled cannon in the world, but not for long.

Good evening,

Update to my previous post :

A similar projectile was found recently in France (Marne) and disposed by EODs

Here are some pictures :

After disposal :
FR_PRO_TENON16MLE1858bis.jpg
You can see three cavities inside, with openings

After "renovation" :
FR_PRO_TENON16MLE1858.jpg

Diam : 145mm, length without plugs 413mm, eye 23mm
One of the studs is photoshopped (left bottom on the picture)

A lead lest was cast by the bottom into the top of the shell (the two other cavities were filled with black powder) :

The projectile was sealed by plugs (looking like top part of the PELLE fuze) :

The one on the right (with nicks) was at the top

We couldn't find (yet) any documentation in the french books we have (still searching)

Still looking for more information

Regards,

S.
