German ww2 Bofors Conundrem?

waffenamt

Well-Known Member
Hi Chaps,
I have a couple of 40 mm Bofors in the collection.
The question is how come they are different sizes of cases and odd differences to the projectiles?
Mick seems to think some cases are cut down, but the projectiles seem to fit snugly?
I do like these and will end up `keepers` but i am curios as to whats happened?
I assume there has been a bit of the case on 2 of them lost during de-ac in the past?
I picked up 2 of them last weekend, was a lucky boy but i had to dig through piles of packing crates to find them!

cheers

Hacksaw job ?

Very nice find Waff, but they look like they have been cut as the right hand one appears to have an angled rim at the top where it has presumably been "hacksawed" off.

Lets take a peek at the projectiles...

Question sorted !

Lets take a peek at the projectiles...

Paul your picture shows the answer to your question=the cases have been cut down as the evidence is sat on the bottom of the projectile-the case neck is still crimped onto the projectile (that is what appears to be the second driving band!)

Why oh why do people butcher such fantastic items ?:tinysmile_cry_t4:

proj bottoms for the tracer units?

Hi Paul its interesting to see the firing pin has,nt struck the primer centrally

Marks 1 and II etc

Waff I wonder if the difference between the projectiles is due to different drawings or different "Marks" as in Mk 1 Mk II etc etc.

Some of the 17 pounder AP rounds vary slightly if you look closely at them and the only reason is ongoing improvements or modifications made during the production of these items-what are the projectile dates ? that may give you a clue as to the differences.

Very nice items and glad that you are intending to keep them.

Thanks for the info chaps,i reckon you are right with the slight differences. Its deffo the case end now you mention it thats stuck to the proj bottom.
The codes on one of the full rounds are ENZ 42(Enzesfelder Metallwerk A.G. Werk Enzesfeld/N.D).

cheers

Loslau, the jkg is produced only for Germany. (We manufactured shells to England too, but because war, we fired it all of them. It is only curiosity. :tinysmile_shy_t:) Did you ever see, Hungarian made KZ40 fuze?

In the picture.
Hungarian 43M AP-T projectile.
Similar to the HE proj. but inside the shell, there is a hard steel core.
Under the aluminium cap, incendiary mixture.

Some pictures about the base fuzes.

1.) 36M base fuzes: left normal, right dummy fuze.
2.) 38/40M base fuzes for the 39M HE projectiles. VG means DIMVAG (not Budapest but Disgyőr).
