Any one seen one of these???

12 wick-holders on the whole surface. .A hand grenade of this type was designed by Felice Orsini, Italian patriot and writer, in his attempt to murder the French Emperor Napoleon III, by the Opra Garnier, causing a carnage with 12 people killed and 156 injured. Napoleon was unhurt, protected by its armored coach.

Interesting, Those 'wick holders' look like nipples from a precussion pistol/revolver :tinysmile_grin_t: I guess if you put percussion caps on all those nipples and throw it one is going to hit the ground and set the thing off?

There's one of these beauties in Queen Victorias childrens museum in the Alpine shed at Osborne House, IoW. They also have (Armstrong, i think) scale model canon, that looks like it had been used by the children and left out in the rain at some point. The fort around the back is well worth looking at as well. Nice childrens size trench system complete with real canons.

it looks like the inside of the US Civil War Hanes Excelsior Grenade.
it should have two outer hemespherical covers that screw together over it. once filled with gunpowder and percussion caps placed on all the nipples the two covers would CAREFULLY be screwed together and it was ready to be thrown by a madman!:xd:
upon landing one or more of the percussion caps would be crushed and set of the grenade. it must have been very dangerous to throw.

Yes, it is a late Orsini like hand bomb. The Orsini-Taylor variant was also used from some US patriots (against Lincoln). The grenade has no outside cover like the Hanes-Excelsior/Pelican grenades from US, also the percussion caps are different; they are from pistols/rifle. The bomb dropped against Napoleone was a bit different: it was cylindric-ovoid with the caps just at one heavyest side and charged with "Fulminato di Mercurio".

Nick, is it a3.5 inch sphere?

It is most likly a 'Hanes Patent' grenade that was fitted inside an outer sphere.
There were 2 models, one 2.5 inch the second one with a 3.5 inch sphere and 12 friction fit bronze nippels. (W.W. Hanes pat, Aug 26, 1862)
(it is mentioned in the grenade recognition manual vol I )
