One of my friends has been doing a review on some ops one of our ordnance clearance teams just did in the Pacific.
Anyone who may be working around old WW-II Japanese ordnance; be super aware of a filler called HND.

In the event that a break in the munition case happens or a low order occurs and some black, oily goop is left over; don TAP gloves, apron and at least a face shield (also a respirator if available) as soon as you see it.
Do NOT get this stuff on your skin as you will have a rash followed by blisters that will last for a few weeks.

The ordnance item was verified as an HE bomb before the procedures started and all indications were a possible picric acid filler, which they've cut into many times. The black goop was a total surprise.
HND is known as an explosive used by the Japanese and Germans, but was dropped because of its toxicity.

Very interesting indeed. Do you happen to have anymore information of references on HND and also of its use by the Japanese as I and no doubt many others would be very interested.

Hexanitrodiphenylamine. Used mainly by the IJN as a 30-70 or 40-60 mix of HND to TNT in torpedo heads, sea mines and depth charges. HND is very toxic and caustic.

The specific bomb they were cutting was ID'd as the Japanese Type 3, No 25, Mk 8Mod 1 645 lb. bomb and the filler is listed as Type 97 explosives. The team leader says it was a complete surprise to them, lucky he was the only on that got bit, But it could have been worse. And that of all the ordnance they have recoved and cut open or destroyed this was the first time they have come across this explosive
