One of my friends has been doing a review on some ops one of our ordnance clearance teams just did in the Pacific.
Anyone who may be working around old WW-II Japanese ordnance; be super aware of a filler called HND.
In the event that a break in the munition case happens or a low order occurs and some black, oily goop is left over; don TAP gloves, apron and at least a face shield (also a respirator if available) as soon as you see it.
Do NOT get this stuff on your skin as you will have a rash followed by blisters that will last for a few weeks.
The ordnance item was verified as an HE bomb before the procedures started and all indications were a possible picric acid filler, which they've cut into many times. The black goop was a total surprise.
HND is known as an explosive used by the Japanese and Germans, but was dropped because of its toxicity.
