Help to ID 81mm mortar bomb attachment

Hi there,

Apologies for the non-detailed title. I have an 81mm mortar bomb which I believe to be French (the brass cap on the primer charge has French writing) and with it came a long steel cup that screws into the top of the bomb and, to which I assume, screws the fuse.

Here are two photos of the bomb and cup/container.

Can anyone help ID what it is for?

You must have above a gaine for 24/31 RY 17 or RYG 18

The frenchies used 81 mm mortar declassed with a special Smk gaine for exercices.

Thanks for the replies, gents.

Does anyone know whether the thread on the fuse and casing is universal?

By that I mean would you be able to screw a U.S. M45 fuse into a French casing?

Regards,

Paul
