I have found out that it is an experimental floating river mine, Uk, anyone know where I could find anymore information on these. thanks

the diameter is approx 245mm and the overall height is approx 350mm with it being 285mm from base to ridge. Im not sure if the is the complete munition or not.

Thanks a bunch Tony

It doesn't appear to be large enough to be a depth charge. U.S. models are twice that diameter at least.

I'm away from my books at the moment, but it looks similar to a number of floating smoke pots. They came in a wide variety of sizes, from a large number of countries. I'd start in OP 1664, them check the TM 9-1985 series for an ID.

W Bomb

Tony,

You are absolutely right, it is a river mine; designed by Jefferis and Midgley (of MD1 and Midgely Harmer Ltd) in 1939/40 as a fluvial mine to be dropped into the Rhine. Known as a 'W Bomb'. It is mentioned in Macrae's book 'Winston Churchill's Toyshop' and in Hogben's 'Bombs Gone'.

The example in the photograph is pretty complete.
