He was the sole aerial observer of the Gulf of Tonkin incident which was a major military escalation which practically started Viet Nam War https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Stockdale. And you'll be surprised how many (or few) people know about it. And after watching this movie you'll understand why the main gate at NAS North Island in Coronado is called Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Gate. And why there is a A-4 Skyhawk displayed in front of it.
