Hopefully of interest to some: Shrapnel and HE shell were made from bar steel or forged steel, but some chemical loaded shell were cast. The attached images - from a factory photograph album sequence showing the manufacturing process at a Scottish munitions factory in WWI - are of 6-inch chemical shell.
