It was a good chance to take. I don't involve myself with small arms material
any more, but some things just cannot be resisted.
I saw this odd leather reinforced with steel box at a military show. It had been sitting there
for 6 hours, easy to over looks, but I noticed the tag (off putting price on the other side)
So I haggled and got it for 2/3 of what they wanted, still rather a lot for me at this stage
in the show.
It turns out to be the Ammunition box for the Tricycle mounted Lightweight Maxim gun/s.
I have two different pairs of images possibley on the same tricycle using , or trialing the
unit. So as Amunition boxes go there may have been only 8 , or mabe more if anything
ever came out of this rather optomstic combination. There were 135 guns made apperantly,
but due to over heating (not a surprize) it was a failure. I don't expect they were sold with the cycle
as cavalry was the market.
The Maxim Nordenfelt mark is directly under the top strap on the case so a good image of it is
difficult to obtain.

It was a strange coincidence that you showed this. My stepfather's maternal grandfather was a member of the First Tower Hamlets Volunteers when he enlisted in the 96th Company, 24th Brigade of the Imperial Yeomanry on 6th March 1901 and was then sent to fight in the Second Boer War. He might even have known those people in the photos. I think I would have preferred the headgear of those in the 3rd and 4th photos to that of the men in the first two photos. Thanks for posting them.

Having to wear that headgear in the first two photos gives one a reason to carry a machine gun!
