Also known as "The Admiral" in the English world (not to be confused with Russian "Admiral" (2008) which by the way has a fantastic WWI naval battle scene in the beginning). I'll watch it tonight, but it must be good, just look here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQMhB_BBttM

A handsome smartly balanced story, the war, personal lives, Royal intrigues and political infighting are given a nice well spread coverage. Very patriotic (for Dutch). English are portrayed as brutes. The film implies that de Ruyter invented the Marines, the land soldiers who were carried by the Navy to conduct warfare on enemy's turf, literally. Is this historically true?

For the Dutch Yes. Most of the origine of our marines lies with Michiel the Ruyter and Johan de Witt. The idea was already a little earlier between 1627-1648. Then there were 1000 soldiers devided over several shipt for entering purposes.
