Hi there,i am new to the world of grenade collecting and would appreciate a bit of advice please.i called in to my local militaria shop today and he had three mills grenades for sale, two were in relic condition dated 1915 and were 55 each and the other was in fair condition but had been drilled and filled {practice grenade i presume} dated 1917 with working pin etc priced at 75.please could someone advise as to what they think a fair offer would be for the relics or for the better condition one as he said he would be open to a good offer and i have no idea what to offer him.
Thanks
marc

Hi marc,

I dont collect grenades, so someone may be able to advise better, here is a site though with some relic Mills so you can compare prices/condition with these.....

A lot can depend on what type of baseplug they have etc, so maybe one for the Mills specialist to answer rather than me.
good luck whatever you decide

Hi bud,

welcome to the forum and the world of collecting militaria.

Hagling is the best way i think, especially as the seller is open to offers so start low and work upwards. 30 for the relics and say 50 for the WW1 No 36. Needs to have all its component parts and a good well marked base plug. Also depends on your budget, if you want the lot then ime sure a deal can be struck. Just keep poping at him and ime sure you will get a result. Remember at the moment, cash is king so wave those crinklies at him.

Good luck.

May have missed something, but how do you know its a WW1 36 Mills? I didn't think they drilled through Mills till way after WW1, so possibly just has a WW1 base plug on?

Hi bud,

i have a couple of Gibbons No 36s with holes in them, both with WW1 base plugs, one body dated 1918 and they as a company ceased to exist before WW2[dont know the dates]. Holes were drilled from 1936/7 but i expect these grens were held as training/drill grens in Company stores well before that and just brought up to spec. If only they could talk!!

That makes perfect sense, I didn't think of that. Thanks for clearing it up.

I havent paid more than 40 for any of my mills (2 x WW1 No5's (one i made into a cutaway was a bit ropey in places, the other is excellent) and 1 x WW2 No36) if your serious about collecting go to a militaria fair, as you will ge them cheaper and be able to look at lots of examples
