No 36 restoration

Hello all,
I bought this No 36M training grenade, it had a seized centre tube and no internals. It had only three holes in the body, all others I'd seen had five, anyone know why?
I decided to make a display piece using the body only. I removed the white paint and bought a set of repro lever, striker, spring and pin from Dugup, also a correct base plug, (JP&S) 1944, 36M Mk1.
After a great struggle the centre tube eventually surrendered, I made a brass tool to do it, and once out I could see that it was too corroded to be a viable repair. The three holes were filled with 'chemical metal', so they are invisible from the outside but could be drilled out if it was required to turn it back into a trainer. I gave the body a coat of black lacquer to protect it until I could find any any decent sort of amber coloured lacquer, I also need the purple colour as used in centre tubes. If anyone knows where I can get some of these I'd be very grateful to find out?
I assembled the parts and then went hunting for a useable centre tube. My fund's are limited but I found a damaged, crushed one, on Specialist Auctions with a a good base screw, thanks SMLE.
To get get the tube back to a usable state I made a tool to the inside diameter of the striker hole, and a truncated cone to open the oval top hole back to circular. By carefully driving these back and forth and hammering on an anvil covered with leather I managed to get it about right. and then re drilled the centre hole and the det tube. The split was filled with chemical metal and both ends turned on the lathe to fit.
When it's the correct colour I think will look OK. In the pictures I show the old tube and the temporary det and fuze made while looking for the bit's I needed. I will have to attach the pics in groups to fit the pages.
It's a cheap way to assemble a reasonable piece and I enjoy putting things back together! Hope this may encourage others to have a bash at restoration?
Best regards,
navyman.

good job mate

you can use ''wood knotting'' as golden shellac as its virtually the same and looks very good on bare metal.

I have seen shellac for sale in small hobby pots at the ''range''.

If all else fails use clear varnish with a dab of brown paint mixed into your desired shade.
I use the modeling paints like Humbrol.

Nearly all my stuff is restored from relic condition as i enjoy doing iy more than the collecting!

p.s can we have a picture of it assembled?

Hi Guy,

you have done a grand job on the 36, will look good with a coat of shellac too. You can get shellac on feebay in pellet form, just add meths and its in various colours too.
Also, centre tube dosnt have to be purple, again shellac will do as this was used as well for coating the complete inside of the gren so as stop any chemical reaction with the filling.

Keep posting the pics.

Andy

Hello Andy,
I've been trying to upload the rest of the pictures which show all from start to finish. But technology seems to be beating me at the moment, hoping one of the moderators can help me but meantime I'll try reducing the pic size and see if that helps. Sorry about the delay,
Cheers,
Guy.

Nice one Guy,

green band 1/2 in thick around the middle and the 3 red crosses on the top segments each side and job done.
Great work on the centre tube too, thanks for showing the pics.

Andy

Great work Navyman, I just love it when another classic grenade gets "rescued" especially when it is a fine effort such as this...Dano

Hi Guy,
That is an amazing job you did on that center tube, glad it went to a good home

All the best
Tony

Thanks Tony,
I wasn't sure if that method would work but am very happy with the result. It took about ten hours including making the drifts but I had quite a few wine breaks between each operation. Very important for an old matelot on wheels, sadly not allowed rum any more, spirits would upset my medical routine. Glad that my doctor said red wine in moderation was good for me. Luckily he din't tell me what moderation is.
Thanks again,
Very best wishes,
Guy.

Thanks all for your replies, it's very encouraging to know there are other enthusiasts out there.
Please show me some of your restoration projects?
Cheers,
Guy.

Marriage

Great work Navyman, I just love it when another classic grenade gets "rescued" especially when it is a fine effort such as this...Dano

Hello Dano,
You say a man is finished when he is married?...... That must explain everything, I've been married five times but have had a good partner for the last ten years and she doesn't want to marry so I may be doing something right at last.
More importantly I'm left alone when I'm in my workroom and not being wheeled off to the shops when I've more important things to do!
Cheers,
Guy.

most interesting

You don't say Navyman. I'm on my 3rd wife (married 6 years) and she has the knack to know when to leave me be, which convinces me we will be married at least another 6 years. Between us we have 5 kids and an open door policy when any need a place to stay. Anyway this goes back to another thread but here is a pic of a WW2 #36 I restored.. Best...Dano
