PRINCIPAL DESIGN FEATURES: A thin steel body filled with Berger mixture, a priming composition and delay pellet. Generally similar to the No.56 grenade but external dimensions are 2.56 ins dia x 2.6 to 2.88 ins long. Developed in order to supersede the No.55 and 56 grenades.
MARKING: Brunswick green body colour, with Red filling band.
MK 1 introduced into service in March 1935 and declared obsolete Dec 1945
But no filling weight eh? Would you happen to know the filling weight for the 2 inch Mortar? Might give us a rough idea if the grenade pam lists a one minute burn time and the mortar pam notes two minutes.
The filling weights for the No 63 were two increments of SR269 each 2755 grains, and 400 grains of SR252 priming composition.
The 2-inch Mortar Smoke (Mk II) had three increments of SR269(M) each of 7600 grains, and 400 grains of SR252 priming compositions.
Burn rates are not just a function of filling quantity. Burning surface area and pressure due to orifice sizes come into it (plus other factors no doubt).
