other hobbies

I thought an interesting thread might be what some of our members other hobbies besides grenades/ordnance. Myself, I collect antiques (especially bottles and insulators). And another hobby is I love to cook. Iwon't cook a really extravagant meal unless company is coming over, then I go to town. I also enjoy canning Veggies from my garden. In fact I am affectionately known by my close friends as "The Kitchen Bitch" My favorite food to prepare is Mexican cuisine as I make an enchilada pie that is to die for. Modesty is not one of my strong suits. My wife is an excellent cook also, but you would not know it from our sizes as she is 5' 4" tall and weighs 100 pounds soaking wet. I'm 5' 10" tall and weigh about 150 pounds. but we do love to eat. Also enjoy collecting coca cola stuff as is evidenced by picture..Dano

Hi Dano
Diversing slightly i have a passion for antique clocks watches and victorian musical boxes,I think it is a mechanical hang up i have.
I also enjoy restoring some of the classic WW2 military vehicles that Uncle Sam produced and not forgetting some home grown British militarys aswell.
Prety much one lifetime is not enough for the projects i have to do,in fact i wish i could retire and keep doing what i enjoy for the duration, but hey i suppose i have to work to pay for it all:tinysmile_fatgrin_t.

My oldest daughter is eight now and can ID most german ordnance and
tell the difference between a Ford GPW and a Willys MB a rare quality for a gal:tinysmile_fatgrin_t

Always a pleasure Dano

best phil

Moths, Dano, moths. All recorded and released though. Run 3 traps most nights of the year, have records going back to 1972[yes i know ime a sad ole git] but at least it keeps the old grey cells active being able to identify most of them[99%] without the book.

Hey Andy and Phil, Hobbies are cool, gives you something interesting to persue and in my case keeps my ass out of trouble. Would really like to hear from others because it makes me curious as to what we collect (aside from grenades/ordnance of course). It seems that I have always collected something since a wee lad. I guess it is in my nature. Keep 'em coming. Best to all...Dano

Interesting thread....

For me its an appreciation for antiques not so much collecting them as its not on the affordable list at the moment.I enjoy assisting in the restoration of a trio of FJ model Holdens owned by the father in law and have made/repaired numerous items for these.
My three boys 2,4 and 6 are my biggest distraction,I love spending time with them and normally have them two paces behind me whan Im doing any projects at home, slows things down but wouldnt have it any other way.Like Dano I like to cook and most weekends the kitchen is my domain assisted by my three little buddys.
Most costly other interest would have to be the wife....:tinysmile_fatgrin_t

Hi Dano.
I like retro Honda motorbikes. had a couple of 80s 250s, but storage and new tax and insurance laws over here make it an expensive hobby.
Must say, I love to cook too. Hot and spicy is my norm. Grow my own chillies for the dishes too. Just started veg growing this year so not canning anything yet, just seeing what grows and what doesn't. Interesting though you are exactly the same height and weight as me. My wife is a little taller than yours though.
I also have an interest in bayonets, this being my main interest many years ago. Majority of my collection sold now though but will probably make a come back one day I hope.

Hobbies

Hi Dano,
I have had several hobbies over the years, but they soon turn out too expensive to follow on with, used to restore Land Rovers especialy military ones,The last one I owned was a series IIA 109" FFR(fitted for radio) it came with it's original military plates under the civilian plates,97 EN 71(1964),had this one for 17 years!I also collect cod bottles,do like to cook on occasion, although I prefer eating ( I'm 15 1/2 stone but get away with it as I'm 6'1 1/2") my wife is only 5'2" ( I'm convinced she is elfin!) I also collect British & German uniforms/fieldgear,love digging things up(any thing!) but my first love must be collecting Bayonets, old, new, rare & common,I have 69 on one wall in our living room,& dread to think how many more in boxes, cupboards ect....just got a slap for the elf remark!!!! This could be a new hobbie come to think of it!
Cheers Tony

Then of course there's the shark fishing, something i have been doing since i was 17. All are tagged and released and ime doing it again this weekend in Looe.

Hi Andy,
have you ever run out from Mevagissy? ther's some monsters out there! probably won't let you tag 'em & throw them back without trying to get you back first!!!!
Cheers Tony

Hi Tony,
been to Mevagissy but never fished there and never would as they have a 'kill all they carch' policy. They say it all goes to charity but i wouldnt enjoy that. Neverthless i would have to think hard if i caught a potential British record fish. Only do it with 20lb line but have yet to catch anything more than 110lb on it and we work this out with a length X girth formula.

Fishin'

I love to go fishing, mostly for Bass, crappie, bluegill (good eating). also fish for large carp but won't eat them. The wife and I go every chance we get. Never fished for shark, I love to eat all seafood especially shrimp. At Red Lobster they have coconut breaded shrimp that comes with a pina colada dipping sauce, and really love lobster (too damned expensive). A really fine meal is bluegill filets and fried morels that we hunt and pick in the spring. I don't think i'll ever order a shark steak again. would love to go shark fishing sometime. Dano

Shark Fishing, is something I've always fancied having a go at.. Wish I lived nearer the coast!. My hobbies really these days consist of playing the old guitar. Used to love going Surfing and more recently Windsurfing but nowadays don't live near the sea, or any lake/reservoir so both have had to go on hold.
But long term ambitions are to live somewhere I can do both.. one day :)

Besides collecting German cases, i collect, german shells, german cartridges, more german cases, and more cases, german.:stupido2:

shells

Hi thekees, well I guess you really have an affinity for the German shells and casings! Good hunting...always....Dano

Hi Andy,
I know how you feel,I used to do a lot of wreck fishing, mainly out of Weymouth,on one trip I brought in a 75lbs 4oz conger,of course it was gaffed to be brought in then had the knife in the top of its spine as was the norm,at the time I was cuffed as any conger over 50lbs was an automatic entry to the conger club, then the skipper told me that It would have taken this eel 30-35 years to have got this big(older than me at the time),I never went fishing again.
Tony

Me ,, I collect German stick grenades as my main hobby, then next to this i suppose is the fuses they use,,then i guess the handles then the fittings then the odd steel transport box they come in,, oh!,,,, then there the frag sleeves.
jeeeez,,,,phew I gotta get out more :nerd:

joking, German stick grenades is my main hobby as a few of you know but
my parrots are the real passion, we have three Blue & Gold Macaws a Blue fronted Amazon and a Greenwing Macaw, she's huge,, you don't wanna
get tagged by her beak, trust me it hurts :tinysmile_cry_t4: .
She's paired up with my prize Blue and Gold and together produced fertile eggs so now there is a baby Macaw we have hatched and hand reared, so of course all attention is on the baby macaw untill fully grown up...

A bit of contast but hey,,,that's me :tinysmile_eyebrow_t

Regards Nick

Ive had the pleasant experience of seeing wild Macaws flying free in their native environment, in Belize.
