The problem is that the government has to weigh destroying the economy versus people killed by the virus. It's the "you're damed if you do, you're damned if you dont" position they're in, and with every move, rule or law they implement they damage and upset a group of people and their interests. Add to that the "fruitcakes from funny farm" who believe in government conspiracy's , internet where every idiot can just place his "substantainted" opinion, the virus specialists who do not agree with one another and you have a recipe for disaster. Australia and New zealand have one big advantage, they're islands in the corner of the world that can easily be shut off from the rest of the world. Here we have neighbouring countries with different rules around us; some more strict, some less strict.
Over here we are now starting to open the schools again as children "cannot pass the virus"". I must say I was amazed when I heard this nonsence, because that would also mean they also cannot pass on the flu, polio and other virus diseases.
International travel is -although restricted- still allowed, so we'll be having covid around for a long time to come in my opinion, together with the destructive economic consequences it brings along.
the only thing that would absolutely help is to forbid international travel, restrict people to their own village or town, encourage working from home, and forbid people to leave their homes exept for the ultimate neccecity. That would be the fastest way to get rid of the virus. It would however mean all must cooperate, and that's not going to happen.
