Hi Darren,

Firstly great photos - thanks for sharing...............

Any thoughts on what the stamped "1274" indicates as shown in the last photo here?

Was it a batch number or most probably a serial umber to re-match all sections belonging to the same torpedo......from my limited understanding, early manufactured export torpedos (late 1800s) were manufactured and shipped in eight sections, so it would make sense to stamp the same number on all related and matching pieces. Having stated that, then the number would more likely be a serial number....

All comments welcome?

Thanks

Cheers
Drew

Looks like they've done a good job on the sub repaint. It looked terrible on the outside when I went two years ago.

They are one year into a two year 7m restoration/refit of the submarine. I didn't see it before but yes the outside is in good shape now.

I remember visiting this in around 2001. The sub looked in pretty terrible condition on the outside then. Nice to see that it's being restored.

Nice photos. It seems they have refurbished several items, including the german Biber midget submarine and it's torpedo. I have tried getting in touch with the museum many times, but they seem to ignore all my e-mails... :-(

The torpedo they have mounted on the Biber is a norwegian T1 mod 1 torpedo (ex-german G7a (TI) modernised in the 1960's with wireguidance). I would love to know how that ended up there...

BTW: It seems someone at Gosporth have been visiting the torpedobattery at Herdla outside Bergen (or seen photos from there), as they have copied the wrongful painting of the warhead of one of our torpedoes (and by that revelead their lack of knowledge on german WW3 torpeoes...) ;-)

Hi Natter,

It seems that the museum(s) staff are mostly "volunteers" and they will reply to enquiries "within 28 days" - I got a reply back within a day or two to my surprise. They also will initially assess one's enquiry and may charge before proceeding.

The Museum of Explosion (also in Gosport) took over 3 mths to respond to my query on some of their torpedos.

However most seem to respond in a reasonable timeframe - guess it depends how busy they are and how technically challenging your enquiry is.

Cheers

Drew

Was the Biber midget submarine the one that was "restored " on a tv programme, Salvage Squad I think it was called, thanks for taking time to take pics and posting them for us to share,
Regards,

Thanks, I'll have another go then (or perhaps just visit... Due to the UK National Archives 150% increase of prices for copies, I'm planning a trip to Kew, so I might just include Gosporth as well + a couple of other sites).
