well done, Dave, that's a nice and heavy cracker for many collections.
looking forward to the repainted piece.

Progress so far

After a good wire brushing and dipping the tail in de-ruster for a few days .The first coat of red oxide applied ,iam pleased with the result maybe another rub down and another coat of oxide before the top coats

Hi Dave,

I have attached one picture of russian 120 mm round. You can see some markings and dimensions of theirs. My advice to you, do not paint it green, usually WW2 Russian ammo are painted silver gray (metallic) or normal black tone of metal. I haven`t seen red primer and green colouring as Germans had.

Regards
E

Thanks E ,i took the colour from a book thats usually quite reliable ? so it looks like a rub down and a coat of the metalic silver grey ,no worries, we learn something new every day ,thanks again Dave

Russians also used dark-red paint on 120mm mortar grenades in WW2.

Hi,

i am very interested to see it, do you have some pictures or diagrams to share us, please? Are you sure that red one is pure Russian. In my experience, WW2 Russian ammonition are mostly painted as silver - rifflegrenades, mortar grenades, projectiles.

Regards
E

Unfortunately I don't have pictures from it.
I had one at last year what (original) color is dark-red. I'm sure that it was Russian, from 1944.

Hi

I also have one complete round as well, restored painted green, but not by me.

To go with the round I also have the mortar, 12cm Gr.W 378(r) not complete and a Finnish manual dated 1941.
