Russian stick grenade.

I couldn't resist this one when it came up on Specialist recently.

Considering its (obviously) a single use hand thrown item there's a huge amount that goes into some of these modern grenades.

Would I be right in assuming something pops out the handle to make sure the handle remains upright so ensuring the cone is at precisely the right angle when it hits the tank/AFV?

Dave.

Dave, correct, you should have a RKG-3E (or EM). The piece of cloth you see in the back of the handle is a folded parachute which will be opened by spring loaded wires once it is pushed out of the handle after throwing. This will assure that it will hit the target head on and ignite the charge on impact.

Here a scetch of how it looks in flight:

Just in case:
Never touch any RKG-3 variant with the chute out!!! (unless it is a cutaway or obviously deactivated)

Thanks everyone.
What would the armour penetration capability be?
Dave.

If the web is correct (matching my guess too though):
RKG-3M Penetration : 170 mm RHA.
RKG-3EM Penetration: 220 mm RHA.

Thanks.
WOW!
I guess its restricted to a degree by the size of the cone but even so, that's not bad for a grenade.

Hi Dave,

That's a great item. If the seller was prepared to ship internationally, it would have come my way:xd:. There ia a video link in one of the BOCN threads that shows them being used in Iraq. The attached picture show's a few screen captures from that video and a little bit of information on them. Cheers

They also can be mad into a Booby-Trap. The NVA and the VC both used this grenade to good effect.
