SC500 Nose off

Now i have the materials to start my 500 restoration
i thought i would start by removing the nose cone.

carefully grinding out the welds and back to the original rebate
i was able to get the body away clean.

The donar tube is 6mm under sized and i aim to use the plasma cutter
to open the donar tube up along the lengh and allow it to fit into the rebate on the cone.

next stage is to remove the back end complete.

looks like an impressive project satan. What are the dimentions of the beast?

Thanks leeski,I have been looking forward to doing this for a while
and yep plasma cutters are pretty neat bits of kit and will enable me
to cut the fuse pocket hole out nicely.

Regards Satan.

Hi Charlie
It does look a bit daunting but the sizes are 4ft 9in long without tails
and 18 inches diameter, and i cant lift the nose on its own as it is the main
part of the weight of the bomb which is roughly 227kg empty.

Once i have replaced the lifting point on the casing then i can use the hoist.

All systems go now mate and as i am blowing out stoneleigh on sunday
i will be making some progress on the bomb.:joyman:

Hi Birdseye

I am replacing the centre section of body and making two
fuse pockets for an SC500 kilo german bomb.

Regards Satan

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

500 kilo ~ 1 ton (in real, authentic measurements).

Got it now. Thank you.

Where did you happen upon this thing?

ed

It came from a friend in EOD,that thought it needed some
Restoration work as it had been used as a practise bomb
for drilling.

Hi Steve
Now i have started restoring and looked into the fuse pocket construction
i will be putting twin pockets back in,(hopefully) if not then i will turn the
nose into a dinner bell as it sounds great.

Birdseye

1 long ton = 2240lb = 1016kg

1 short ton = 2000lb = 907kg

1 metric ton = 2204lb = 1000kg

The long ton is the imperial ton and the short ton is the US ton.

Hi phil Spoke to a couple of wartime BD officers this morning, reference our conversation , they confirmed most were single fuze pockets, with just a few doubles .i then looked at captain hunts records he lists 2 x500 kg one of each.
