Scarbrough castle !

Well-Known Member
I have been to the scarborough war weekend at the castle over the bank holiday, it was a good day out with battles and a MK2 b hurricane fly over, i thought we might aswell look around the castle and the re-enactment at the same time, it was a good day out i came across part of a German navel shell in a glass case that was interesting it was from the German raid on the coast in 1914, the scars of the raid are still visable today !

WW1- 16 December, 1914 Scarborough

Shelling by German battlecruisers 'Derfflinger' and 'Von der Tann' Firing 500 shells in 15 minutes !!! at the town before moving on to whitby

Town bombarded by German warships: 19 people are killed, the Lighthouse is destroyed and had to be demolished. There was further damage to the Royal hotel, Grand Hotel and the Town Hall not to mention to the castle Keep, destroyed the castle barracks and curtain walls.. The furthest bomb damage was three miles inland on a Farm !

it seemed to be a interesting day out as i had heard of these raids but didnt expect to see parts of shells and damage from the raid ! overall a good day out :tinysmile_grin_t:
